UnumProvident Garners Top Ranking For Individual Disability Income Protection

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.-- UnumProvident has received a top ranking for the success of its individual income protection insurance sales, according to JHA's 2003 U.S. Individual Disability Market Survey.

JHA, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, is a disability reinsurance, consulting and market research firm, and a leading source for information and data about the disability market.

UnumProvident generated nearly $63 million in new sales from more than 69,000 individual income protection policies in 2003.  With more than 1 million existing policies in force, generating nearly $1.5 billion in annual premium, UnumProvident's share of the individual disability market is greater than its two largest competitors combined.

For the 28th consecutive year UnumProvident also leads the industry in group disability income protection insurance, generating approximately $400 million in new sales premiums in 2003, according to a separate JHA survey announced last month.

"We are pleased to be the No. 1 choice for individuals and groups when it comes to fulfilling income protection needs," says Thomas R. Watjen, UnumProvident president and chief executive officer. "Our leadership in the disability market is a testament to the strength and value of the products we offer, the high quality service we provide, and the outstanding claims management practices of our benefits professionals."
