American Equity Appoints Kunkel as General Counsel

American Equity Investment Life Holding Company, an underwriter of index and fixed rate annuities, announced the appointment of William Kunkel as its EVP – Legal and General Counsel.

Previously, Kunkel was a partner in the Chicago office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP until his retirement in June 2012. His practice concentrated on mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, and other corporate governance and securities matters.

“I am excited to join the American Equity family and management team at this important time in the company’s development,” Kunkel said. “American Equity has enjoyed tremendous success since its formation in 1995. I believe that American Equity has outstanding potential and I look forward to using my talents and experience to help the company achieve even greater success in the years that follow.”

He has represented public and private companies in many industries and is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Creighton University.

“We are delighted to announce Bill’s appointment as General Counsel,” said David Noble, executive chairman, and John Matovina, CEO and president. “The depth and breadth of his professional experience, strong leadership abilities, and knowledge of American Equity’s business having represented us for more than 15 years make him a natural fit for this position. His addition to our executive management group complements the experienced group of executives that have worked together as a team for many years.”
