BCBSMA Automates, Expands Disaster Recovery Operation

BOSTON--Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) has purchased the Interwoven Enterprise Web Change Management solution, powered by Interwoven OpenDeploy, to enable faster, accurate and cost-effective synchronization of a disaster recovery site for its member and provider Websites. BCBSMA also purchased the Interwoven Self-Service solution to maintain fresh, personalized content on its Provider Portal.

Headquartered in Boston, BCBSMA provides coverage to 2.6 million members with more than 17,000 healthcare providers in its HMO network. To ensure around-the-clock availability for its members and providers, BCBSMA will establish a duplicate Website in an alternate location that it can switch to live in the event that a disaster or other service interruption brings down the main site. For this strategy to be effective, the two sites must be perfectly synchronized at all times to reflect search engine, portal and personalization updates.

However, due to the high volume of content BCBSMA features on its site, as well as applications including a provider portal and "My Wellbeing" member portal, this synchronization process can be very challenging. In the past, BCBSMA has relied on a manual deployment process executed by a team of consultants, which can be a costly and time consuming approach. BCBSMA decided that the company needed to automate and streamline its disaster recovery processes to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
