DHS Codifies Disaster Recovery

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) adopted the final standards for the Voluntary Private Sector Preparedness Accreditation and Certification Program (PS-Prep). DHS says the public-private partnership will help improve private sector preparedness for disasters and emergencies.

"Private organizations across the country—from businesses to universities to non-profit organizations—have a vital role to play in bolstering our disaster preparedness and response capabilities," DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement. "These new standards will provide our private sector partners with the tools they need to enhance the readiness and resiliency of our nation."

The Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc. (RIMS) is hailing the new standards. “RIMS believes very strongly that business continuity and emergency preparedness are a critical component of any organization’s enterprise risk management plan,” RIMS Standards and Practices Committee Chair Carol Fox said in a statement.
