Farmers Insurance has unveiled a new telematics offering, Signal, which monitors distracted driving and records behavioral patterns.

Program features include trip tracking, mileage recording as well as harsh braking, excessive speeding, and distracted driving alerts, according to the insurer. Policyholders can also monitor distraction details for everyone participating on their insurance plan. At launch, Signal is available only to Farmers Smart Plan Auto customers in Arizona. No timeline for expansion has been disclosed.

"We know how consequential distracted driving can be and are increasingly exploring new innovations and technologies that can add value for our customers and help curb this dangerous trend," says Mariel Devesa, head of product innovation for Farmers Insurance, in a statement. "By equipping drivers with knowledge of their driving habits, we empower them so they can make smarter choices about their behavior behind the wheel."

After completing 10 trips on Signal, customers will receive a three-percent discount on their auto policy. Discounts, applied at the time of renewal, will adjust based on driving score and the rate of household participation in the program, the company says.
