Guy Carpenter Selects New General Counsel

Melvin Schwarz is retiring from his post as general counsel of Guy Carpenter, the reinsurance subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan Companies and will be replaced by Katherine Brennan

Brennan also will become a member of Guy Carpenter’s board of managers and global operating committee as of the first of the year. She will report to Peter Beshar, EVP and general counsel of Marsh & McLennan Companies, and Alexander Moczarski, Guy Carpenter’s president and CEO.

Brennan has been a member of the Marsh & McLennan legal team since 2008 and is senior counsel for corporate and securities matters. She also was assistant corporate secretary, and worked with the board of directors, including acting as secretary of the audit committee.

Previously she was a corporate lawyer at Dewey & LeBoeuf, where she also completed secondments with Ambac Assurance Corp. and Scottish Re Group Limited. Brennan earned her bachelor’s degree from Duke University and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Schwarz joined Guy Carpenter as general counsel in 2005 and is a member of the board of managers and global operating committee, and co-chair of the compliance and risk management committee. Previously he was a partner at Dechert LLP, where he began his career in 1975. From 1998–2000, Schwarz was special counsel for civil enforcement with the antitrust division of the United States Department of Justice.

“Mel has been an extraordinary colleague within the Legal Department, as well as a strategic advisor to numerous business leaders across the organization,” Beshar said. “I would like to thank Mel for his wonderful contributions and congratulate Kate on her appointment,” he added. “Kate has been an invaluable member of our legal team, and I look forward to continuing to work with her in her new role.”
