Hancock Names Boyle President

John Hancock Financial Services, a Boston unit of Toronto's Manulife Financial Corp., has promoted James R. Boyle to president.

Boyle, 49, succeeded John D. DesPrez 3rd, who was promoted this month to COO of Manulife and chairman and CEO of Hancock. The Boston company, which announced the promotion last week, said that Boyle, the 21st president since its founding in 1862, is also on Manulife's executive and management committees.

Boyle was president of John Hancock's U.S. insurance division. Before that he was president of its U.S. wealth management division. He is on the board of directors of John Hancock Trust and John Hancock Funds. He has worked at Manulife since 1992.

Hancock accounted for 58% of Manulife's $330 billion of assets under management at Dec. 31.
