NOAA Forecasts Active Hurricane Season

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) hurricane season forecast is projecting a 70-percent likelihood of 13 to 20 named storms in 2013, of which anywhere from seven to 11 could become hurricanes, and anywhere from three to six of those hurricanes could reach category 3, 4 or 5 status.

According to the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, the Colorado State University Department of Atmospheric Science is projecting 18 named storms, including nine hurricanes, with four expected to be major. AccuWeather.com is also forecasting four major hurricanes and 16 tropical storms.

“These projections show we can expect another active hurricane season, and experience has shown that a major storm can strike anywhere along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts,” said Christopher Hackett, PCI’s director, personal lines policy. “While the hurricane risk is greatest in Florida, Hurricane Sandy reminded us that any area along the coast is vulnerable.”

Next week is National Hurricane Preparedness Week, the last week before Hurricane season begins on June 1.
